COMMENTS
|
In Italy, the "Magical
Mystery Tour" soundtrack was released as a special double
E.P. package, too. This is the only commercial Beatles EP issued in Italy (DECIMBER 4, 1967). Three different covers can be found for this double EP set:
It is not clear which cover came first. A hypothesis states that the Italian cover was the first issue and that the German covers were imported by EMI in the following months. In fact, if we think that this EP was on sale at the end of December we can assume that, by February/March 1968 the stocks were running out. And, although the official Carisch contract ended on August 15, we know that in March EMI Italiana was already involved in Beatles record manufacturing. So it is reasonable to think that as soon as the Carisch stocks were sold out, EMI preferred to import the German sleeves (as was done later for the White Album cover and Let it Be box) than to print them. Incidentally, Germany was a common cover supplier for other European countries since we can find German covers for French and Spanish Beatles MMT' EP and Apple LPs. The two MMT records were generally housed in the Parlophon company sleeves or in a thick, transparent paper bag. A 24 page book, plus a sheet of lyrics, was stapled into the middle. The lyric sheet was on light blue paper. At the inner pocket, the old Apple mark, which looks like a drawing, and the word "Apple Presents" was printed. BIEM: The Bureau International de l'Edition Mécanique (BIEM), also known as Bureau International des Sociétés Gérant les Droits d'Enregistrement et de Reproduction Mécanique, is an organisation coordinating statutory licence agreements among different countries. It administers mechanical rights, ensuring payment of royalties to the creators of musical, literary and dramatic work), which may be reproduced on a CD or DVD, or through digital means, such as downloads from the Internet. The members of mechanical rights societies are composers, authors and publishers. |
