COMMENTS
|
Between 1963
and early 1965 Beatles albums were issued in mono only on a
red "Parlophon" label. In mid 1965 Parlophone issued Beatles
albums on a silver and black label. All of the earlier LP's were reissued onto this label style. New LP's came to be issued in stereo as well as mono. The label design remained unchanged until 1968 / early 1969 when EMI printed its new "Parlophone" label. All LPs up to The Beatles in Italy were released in mono only, while from Ainto! to Sgt. Pepper, a stereo edition also exists. The stereo issue was generally pressed sometime after the mono version. But the gap between the two versions kept decreasing with each release: for example, the stereo version of Aiuto! was pressed nine weeks after the mono LP, while between the Rubber Soul mono and stereo versions the time was reduced to just two weeks, and one day only elapsed between the Oldies but Goldies mono and stereo issues. The stereo editions were distributed using the "mono' cover on which a round silver sticker carrying the word 'STEREO' printed in black was placed on the left front cover edge and across the cover spine. The mono pressings had the release number PMCQ 315** , while the stereo copies, retaining the same mono release number, added an 'S' before the mono prefix, thus turning it into SPMCQ 315*** All stereo LPs were released on the black Parlophon label. For the first time in this country, is identical to the original UK release design. A slight variation can be found in the lettering used for the song titles on the label, where either bold' or 'thin' lettering was used. There is no proof to determine which was the first issue, although, the 'thin' lettering should be the first, as the bold' one can be found on the late 1969 EMI issue still using the Parlophon label. Also, on the B-side label, the word 'Got' in 'Got to get you into my life is misspelt as 'Gott'. This happens only on the copies (both mono and stereo) which have the song titles printed in thin lettering. 1st press COVER: Single pocket type. Laminated front and back sides. boxed "Dischi Parlophon" logo was not printed on front; "DISCHI PARLOPHON logo CARISH s.p.a. MILANO" bottom on back.
