COMMENTS
|
The first EP issued was
"TWIST AND SHOUT (GEP 8882)", but this was not the first one
manufactured and ready for release. The EP "THE BEATLES' HITS (GEP
8880)" was originally going to be issued in 1963 as the first EP, but
was put on hold due to the great popularity of the song "Twist and
Shout"; so, as an alternate EP, "TWIST AND SHOUT" was issued first
instead. This E.P. contained four tracks all taken from the first L.P. "Please Please Me". Beatles own compositions were credited to "McCartney - Lennon". |

COMMENTS
|
Beginning in 1964,
Parlophone (and all the other EMI companies) began printing a phrase in
the centers of all their singles, EP's and LP's, which said: SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS, SEE PRICE LISTS. The side-2 label was mis-printed with "Do You Want A Know A Secret" instead of "Do You Want To Know A Secret" in roman type. |

COMMENTS
|
The Beatles' 2nd. E.P. This E.P. contained the first three hits and one B-side. "Please Please Me" is the original single version (without "the mistake"), and "Love Me Do" is the album version (Drums:Andy White). ALL tracks are attributed as writers to ... "McCartney - Lennon". The earliest pressings were missing the "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1963" statement on the label. |

COMMENTS
|
The Beatles' 3rd E.P. And another four tracks lifted from the album "Please Please Me". The E.P. looks like a same artwork from the album "Please Please Me", but used another take of photo. The Beatles own compositions (Side 1) are attributed to "McCartney-Lennon". Sleeve notes are again by Tony Barrow, but this time the address of "The Official Beatles Fan Club" is also given. |

The Beatles' 4th E.P. After the test pressings were approved, and copies were run with the promo labels on them, the printer then loaded the machines with the proper labels for the disk's standard release. Then samples were taken from possibly each press machine making the records, and affixed with a sticker (red ink on white) and checked for quality. Except for the sticker, the disk is exactly as it will be when it is released. The cover design looks like a same artwork from the album "With The Beatles" with a picture by Robert Freeman, and the sleeve notes are by Tony Barrow. Starting with "All My Loving (GEP 8891)*", all the EP's, like the singles and LP's in early 1964, began carrying this statement, which was used on every other future original EP issue: "SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS. SEE PRICE LISTS". This phrase was used on all EMI singles, EP's and LP's until the summer of 1969. *But, early commercial pressings were not printed the statement "SOLD IN U.K....". Beatles own compositions were credited to "McCartney - Lennon" (except "All My Loving"). |

Solid center type. The 5th. pressing was with capitalized printing of "THE GRAMOPHONE CO. LTD." at the perimeter. The "Sold in U.K." text has gone from the label, and the "(P) 1963" statement. This single was manufactured two ways: both with and without the push-out center. (maybe) |
