1982 MONO Limited
Edition. In 1982, Toshiba re-issued the 10 Beatles UK albums that had been originally issued in mono in the 60s, using the UK mono masters, all pressed on translucent red vinyl, as a limited edition of 10,000 pressings of each record. Each comes with a narrow OBI strip with red disc and "The Beatles Original Mono Record" at the top, and the entire mono series on the back side. These records contain the original U.K. mono mixes and parallel very closely the U.K. mono reissue series that came out in England around the same time. Disc/Label info: Black with silver print Odeon label. Uses a UK master as identified by matrix stamp The words "MFD. UNDER LICENCE BY TOSHIBA-EMI LTD. IN JAPAN" was printed at the perimeter on the label. "JASRAC" logomark was printed on the label. Packaging info: Includes Japanese/English lyric sheet insert. OBI states ¥2,300, list of titles in series on back side. Discs come in clear rice-paper sleeve. Has the same design and track listing as U.K. Yasumi Yamamoto: Japanese translator, credited with lyric translations on many rock and pop releases. Has translated lyrics for The Beatles, Billy Joel, Simon & Garfunkel, Queen, etc. Born in Sapporo, Japan in September 1948. The obi: Custom Red obi. The commemorative custom red thick obi of the 20th anniversary of Beatles' Japan visit. It also features an EMI/Odeon logo, catalogue number and price information. While most Japanese records feature local music, a lot of music fans there like foreign music, as well. The language barrier in Japan presented a problem – should foreign album covers be changed for Japanese albums? The solution was the obi, which means “belt” or “sash”. The obi is a strip of paper, usually about two inches wide, that wraps vertically around the album cover, containing information about the artist and album in Japanese. As these strips of paper were fragile and easily torn, they are often missing, especially since consumers in the 1950s and 1960s attached little significance to them. Finding Japanese records made prior to 1970 that still have the obi intact can be quite difficult, and for some albums, nearly impossible. The inclusion of the obi can dramatically affect the price of some Japanese records, sometimes increasing the price by a factor of ten.
