COMMENTS
|
The covers for Sgt. Pepper have
full-color inside and outside slicks. The inside gatefold
slick, featuring a portrait of the band, is the same for
both mono and stereo covers. The outside slick is also the
same, but is trimmed differently for mono and stereo covers.
On mono covers, the slicks are trimmed at the top so that
the number MAS 2653 appears in the lower right corner of the
back cover. On stereo covers, the slicks are trimmed at the
bottom so the number SMAS 2653 appears in the upper right
corner of the back cover. The initial mono covers are identified by the lack of any references to NEMS, the Brian Epstein-owned management company, or Maclen Music, the American company holding the publishing for songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Later-issue covers have references to either NEMS or both of the companies appearing towards the bottom of the back cover. The next batch of covers add a reference to NEMS, with two variations confirmed for mono covers. The mono large-print NEMS covers have g© NEMS ENTERPRISES LTD., 1967h printed horizontally in the lower left corner. No stereo covers of this variation have been confirmed. The other NEMS variation has the same copyright notice in microprint in the lower right corner above the factory information. The final variation adds a reference to Maclen Music. The phrase gAll rights for the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines controlled by MACLEN MUSIC INC.h appears in the lower right corner. To make room for the additional language, the NEMS copyright claim is moved and appears in small print running vertically along the lower right side of the back cover. It is also modified to g© 1967 NEMS—NEMS ENTERPRISES LIMITED.h The mono NEMS/Maclen variation is the rarest of the Sgt. Pepper covers. The initial labels printed for the album mistakenly list the second song on Side One as gA Little Help From My Friendsh rather than gWith A Little Help From My Friends.h There are East Coast, West Coast, and thick print in-house mono labels with the title error. The West Coast and in-house labels list the title track above the spindle hole. The albums with thick in-house labels were all manufactured by Capitolfs Jacksonville plant (maybe). Capitol later corrected the label copy to show the complete title of With A Little Help From My Friends. As this change took place at a time when mono was being phased out, most mono discs have labels with the incorrect title. Both East Coast mono and West Coast mono labels with the complete song title have been confirmed. The initial pressing of the album came with a psychedelic inner sleeve designed by a Dutch group, "The Fool," who also painted the side of the Apple Corps building, as well as John Lennon's limousine. As part of the groupfs desire to give more to their fans, the Beatles wanted to include an envelope containing items such as stickers and buttons. EMI balked at this idea due to cost factors. A compromise was reached when the Beatles agreed to a cardboard insert containing cutout images of a moustache, a picture card of Sgt. Pepper, uniform stripes, badges of the Sgt. Pepper logo and of a bust of Sgt. Pepper and a stand up of the Beatles in their Sgt. Pepper uniforms. The 12" x 12" green background insert is signed in the lower right corner by artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth. The Capitol version of the insert has gPRINTED IN U.S.A.h in the lower left corner. The inserts are printed on different paper stocks and exhibit slight color variations. In addition, some of the inserts are missing the number g5.h to the left of the Beatles stand up. |
