COMMENTS | The Abbey Road covers for the East Coast
were manufactured by Shorewood's Farmingdale, Long Island,
New York plant. The West Coast covers were made by Bert-Co under licence from Shorewood. The initial labels prepared for Abbey Road do not list "Her Majesty" on side-2. There are three layout variations of the first issue labels. All have the record and matrix numbers to the light of the spindle hole and "STEREO" to the left. Type-1-1: The most common label variation has the album title above the group's name (centered towards the top of the apple on Side-1 and in the upper left part of the apple on Side-2) and the side number to the right of the spindle hole. Side-1 has "Producued by George Martin" and "Recorded in England" on two lines at the bottom of the apple. Side-2 has the recording location in the lower left part of the apple and the production credit in the lower right part. All titles on Side-2 are below the spindle hole. The labels have light green apples and Apple perimeter print on the sliced side. They have been confirmed with Capitol Los Angeles pressings as well as Decca and RCA pressings. Type-1-2: A second variation has the album title and group's name on one line towards the top of the apple, the side number to the left of the spindle hole and "Produced by Geroge Martin", "Recorded in England", and "Manufactured by Apple Records, Inc." on three lines at the bottom of the apple. The first three song titles on Side-2 are above the hole. The labels, which have light green apples and Apple perimeter print on the sliced side, were probably printed in-house by Capitol's Jacksonville factory. Jacksonville and Scranton pressings have been confirmed. Type-1-3: The least common variation has labels with a thin compressed font for the album title and group's name. On Side-1, this information is on two lines centered at the top of the apple. On Side-2, the album title is on two lines in the upper left part of the apple and the group's name is in the upper right part. The side number is to the right of the spindle hole. Side-1 has "Produced by George Martin" and "Recorded in England" on two lines at the bottom of the apple. Side-2 has this information in the lower right part of the apple. All titles on Side-2 are below the spindle hole. These labels, which have light green apples, were probably printed in-house by Capitol's Scranton factory. They can be found with Apple perimeter print on the sliced side (Scranton and Non-Capitol pressings confirmed), and Capitol logo perimeter print on the sliced side (Winchester confirmed). The later labels add "Her Majesty" to Side-2 and shift "Produced by George Martin" from the lower right to the upper right part of the sliced apple. The third variation, has "All rights reserved" credit type. All with Apple perimeter print on the full apple. |

In September, 1975, Capitol
added a lengthy "All Rights Reserved" saying to all their
albums. The Beatles/solo catalog remained on the Apple
label until January, 1976; after this the orange label was
used for Beatles-related reissues. Therefore, the whole LP
catalog was transferred to the orange Capitol label with "All
Rights Reserved." This label style remained until
February 1978. |

Capitol's green label was first issued in July, 1969. The trademark registration can be found in one of two configurations: either as TM to the right of the word "Capitol" or as (R) underneath the l in "Capitol." At about the time when the green label was discontinued, (May, 1971), the Beatles catalog was switched onto the Apple label. In May, 1971, Capitol redesigned their mainline label to use a more striking red background. The purple “C” logo remained at the top of the label. The registered trademark symbol appears to the right of the word "Capitol." This label appeared on Capitol records numbered from about 682 (May 1971) to about 838 (October 1971). Since the Beatles' catalog switched to Apple that same month, only a few rare specimens survive with this label style: some copies of Revolver and at least two copies of Yesterday...And Today. Orange Capitol Label Type-1: In October, 1972, Capitol left the "red label" behind after pressing it for under two years. The new design was an orange label with “Capitol” at the bottom. Since all Beatles albums were being pressed on the Apple label during 1972-1975, there are no Beatles records on the first or second orange label. This first style used the same rim print from the earlier labels, ending with the patent number for T-Rim. Type-2: In October, 1973, Capitol removed “US PAT NO” and the patent number for T-Rim and centered the rim print better on the label. Type-3: In September, 1975, Capitol added a lengthy "All Rights Reserved" saying to all their albums. The Beatles/solo catalog remained on the Apple label until January, 1976; after this the orange label was used for Beatles-related reissues. Therefore, the whole LP catalog was transferred to the orange Capitol label with "All Rights Reserved." This label style remained until February 1978. |
