COMMENTS
Meet the Beatles! is the the first U.S. Beatles album to be issued by Capitol Records, on 20 January 1964 in both mono and stereo formats. It topped the popular album chart on 15 February 1964.

The front cover to "Meet The Beatles!" uses the same Robert Freeman black and white portrait as "With The Beatles". The "Meet The Beatles!" cover was designed by art department head George Osaki. The portrait of the band has a blue tint not present on the darker all black and white U.K. cover. The Capitol logo and the phrase "HIGH FIDELITY" appear in white in the upper right corner of the photo.
The top portion of the cover has a thin-lined white box containing the album's title and brief text. The words "MEET THE" are in light blue block letters. The remainder of the album's title, "BEATLES!" is usually either tan or brown.

The minor color variation among covers is due to the front slicks being prepared by differeint printers. Front slicks were printed on:
1-1) East Coast: Queens Litho in New York
1-2) East Coast: Ivy Hill Lithograph Co. in New York
As a general rule, "BEATLES!" has more of a medium dark tan appearance on East Covers than on West covers.
2) West Coast: Bert-Co Enterprise of Los Angeles.
West Coast covers are normally darker and have less of a blue tint than East covers.
For economic reasons, Capitol later switched to a four-color printing process. Some of the later slicks used on West Coast covers have "BEATLES!" in dark olive green.

When "Meet The Beatles!" was originally issued, Capitol had factories in
1) Scranton, Pensylvania
2) Los Angeles, California
3) In mid. 1965, added a pressing plant in Jacksonville, Illinois.
(Cover used by the Jacksonville factory typically have "BEATLES!" in light tan.

The lower portion of the back liner contains "Cover photo / Robert Freeman" "MADE IN U.S.A. • FACTORIES: SCRANTON, PA. - LOS ANGELES, CALIF." and the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America" logo.
Most of the back liners have a small numeral located near the lower right or left corner. These numbers were used by Capitol to identify where the album cover was manufactured.
Capitol did not fabricate its own album covers. Capitol required the cover manufacturer to place a factory identification number on the back liners. The fabricators added a small number, usually in the lower right corner.

The following tables detail the cover numbers that are known to exist:

The original issue Capitol albums were manufactured with black label backdrops with an outer rim colorband. Label copy information specific to each album appears in silver print.

There are four basic label variations that can be distinguished by the performing rights organization (BMI or ASCAP) that appears in parentheses after each song title.
1) The first labels prepared for the album were printed without BMI or ASCAP.
2) The 2nd. labels list ASCAP as the performance rights organization for all songs on the SIDE-2, and all songs on SIDE-1 except "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND (BMI)"
3) The 3rd. variation credits all songs on SIDE-2 as ASCAP, except for track #5, "I Wanna Be Your Man (BMI)"
4) the 4th. variation credits only the first and third songs of the SIDE-2 ASCAP. The other four songs on SIDE-2 and all songs on SIDE-1 credited to BMI.

The first three label variations were printed from early 1964 through early 1966.
