COMMENTS

The
Beatles Hamburg recordings have been the subject of several
albums of
dubious origins. The first such disc was "The Savage Young
Beatles",
which appears to have been issued in October 1965. While the
cover
implies that all the songs were recorded by the Beatles in
Hamburg,
only half of the record's eight songs have any Beatles
involvement. The
other four tracks are the same Tony Sheridan recordings that
rounded
out the Polydor album "The Beatles First!". The songs on
"The Savage
Young Beatles" were plobably dubbed from an import copy of
the German
Polydor LP. First issue: It was issued in the early fall (most likely October) 1965 in the U.S. Cover has an orange background in the front with a yellow background on the record labels. The text on the cover above the photographs has an error as it reads “This is the…The Savage Young Beatles.” The double usage of the word “the” was never corrected on any authentic copies. The back cover design included liner notes with 2 incorrect pieces of information. First it mentions that the album contains two of The Beatles first instrumentals when “Cry For A Shadow” is the only instrumental on the record. Secondly, it refers to Pete Best’s singing, and Pete does not sing on this record at all. The original back cover states that the disc was "DISTRIBUTED by CASUAL, 126 W. 42nd. ST., N.Y.C." The rare original orange cover came with records pressed with yellow labels. These labels have "HAMBURG 1961" in large print at the top. Second issue: After a very limited first pressing, the album was repackaged with a yellow background jacket and orange record labels. The text on the cover above the photographs has an error as it reads “This is the…The Savage Young Beatles.” The double usage of the word “the” was never corrected on any authentic copies. The liner notes on the re-issued back covers are modified to remove the mistake about “two instrumentals” on the first back covers and also sympathetically imply that Pete Best was wronged when he was sacked from The Beatles. The text still erroneously refers to Pete Best’s singing. The orange labels have "SAVAGE RECORDS" at the top and "Hamburg - 1961 - Germany" and "Recorded by the Beatles" in small uppercase letters at the bottom. |
