Capitol Red and Orange
Target Label type-3-3 with Circle Capitol ® logo
white background / Matt type. Small font version (Jacksonville press) In April, 1969, Capitol switched to a red and orange target label with the Capitol dome logo overprinted in black at nine o'clock. This new look label was quickly revised in July, 1969, with the Capitol dome logo being replaced by Capitol's new circle logo. Unfortunately, the black circle logo did not always print well, often causing the image to appear as a muddy-looking black circle with a red dot in the center. This problem was corrected in early 1971, when the logo was given a white background and printed as part of the label backdrop. This gave the logo needed definition. During the time singles were pressed with target labels, Capitol was pressing the bulk of its singles at its Scranton and Los Angeles factories. Limited runs of a few titles were also pressed by its Jacksonville plant. When Capitol Records opened its Jacksonville, Illinois, plant in July, 1965, the factory only pressed albums. In August, 1966, the plant began manufacturing 8-track cartridges, with pressing machines for 45-RPM singles added in late 1968. At first, only a few 45-RPM pressing machines were installed, so production of singles was limited to relatively small runs of a few select titles. These discs have either a hand etched circle or a machine stamped "()" in their trail off areas. The only Beatles single manufactured at Jacksonville in the sixties was "We Can Work It Out", which initially was pressed with subsidiary swirl labels with small print. After Capitol phased out its swirl labels, the factory mistakenly pressed a very limited run of this single with the new red and white circle Star Line label. This variation is extremely rare. Later pressings of the single have target circle logo labels with the small print. Both the black overprint, and white background, variations are confirmed. The Jacksonville target discs have dull finish labels in contrast to the glossy labels found on target singles pressed in Scranton and Los Angeles. Jacksonville also pressed copies of the two unique Star Line singles that were part of Capitol's Beatles catalog from October 11, 1965, through December 31, 1965. These target singles, "Roll Over Beethoven / Misery (Capitol Star Line 6065)", and "Boys / Kansas City (Capitol Star Line 6066)", were pressed with the later target labels having the white background behind the circle logo. The Jacksonville factory improperly pressed copies of the Canadian single "All My Loving / This Boy (Capitol of Canada 72144)" with target circle labels with the white background. The disc has the same label copy as the Canadian single, including the listing of W.Hofer as the publisher. The mistake was caught after a small number of singles were distributed. This factory error was further compounded by accidently pressing a portion of these singles with This Boy labels on both sides. These discs, however, play both songs. The target circle label was used for Capitol Beatles singles until the spring of 1971, when Capitol began pressing all of its Beatles singles with Apple labels. |
