COMMENTS
|
"The Beatles' Movie
Medley" was the product of two different ideas. First and
foremost, the single was designed to promote the new Capitol
Beatles theme album, Reel Music, which contained 14 songs
that had appeared in the group's five films. Second, Capitol
hoped to cash in on the proven formula of stringing excerpts
from several songs, all given the same beat, to form a
disco-ready medley. For its medley of Beatles movie tunes,
Capitol selected Magical Mystery Tour, All You Need Is Love,
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, I Should Have Known
Better, A Hard Day's Night, Ticket To Ride and Get Back. The
track was edited by John Palladino.
The single's flip side, Fab Four On Film, is described as
"(THE BEATLES Talk About A Hard Day's Night - 1964)." The
track features comments from the boys provided by the
movie's producer, Walter Shenson, and edited by Randall
Davis.
It had originally been recorded by United Artists in 1964 as
part of an open-ended interview for DJs.
The Beatles' comments have been edited together into one
running track. This interview segment has only been
available on the accompanying 45 promo single and the
promotional 12"
These were issued only to media offices and radio stations
in the US and were not sold in stores.
Designated "Not for Sale" on the labels and back of jacket.
All copies are pressed at Los Angeles plant.
The record was scheduled for release as Capitol B-5100 on
March 15, 1982, but was withdrawn, reportedly over legal
difficulties. Capitol replaced the interview with the mono
version of I'm Happy Just To Dance With You, which
was previously issued as the B side to Capitol 5234 on July
20, 1964. Although the song was featured in the movie A Hard
Day's Night, it was not on the album Reel Music. The
reconfigured single was released as Capitol B-5107
on March 22, 1982.
The replacement single, the name hand etched in the trail
off area to the B side appears to be a script "gene".
Capitol did not prepare promotional labels for the
replacement single.
