COMMENTS
|
In England, Parlophone
issued a series of picture discs to coincide with the 20th
anniversary of the release dates of its Beatles singles,
starting with Love Me Do b/w P.S. I Love You, which was
originally released on October 5, 1962.
Although Capitol passed on the single, its Canadian
subsidiary issued the disc in early 1963 and began importing
copies to the U.S. a year later when Beatlemania exploded in
the States. The songs first appeared on a U.S.-manufactured
single in late April, 1964, on Tollie 9001. Unlike the
Canadian disc and original U.K. pressings, that single used
the later album version of Love Me Do, which has Andy White
on drums and Ringo on tambourine. That version of the song
was used when the single was pressed as part of Capitol's
Star Line series (Capitol 6062) on October 11, 1965.
Capitol released its own 20th anniversary single on November
19, 1982, six weeks after the actual anniversary date.
The disc has the later version of Love Me Do. Although the
labels state that the songs are stereo, they are pure mono.
The picture sleeve features an alternate Angus McBean photo
from the same session that produced the pictures used on the
Please Please Me and Introducing The Beatles album covers.
The back of the sleeve has Love Me Do in red block letters
followed by a plug for Capitol's recently released 20
Greatest Hits LP.
The record was pressed with labels patterned after the
Capitol swirl labels from the sixties. The dises were
manufactured by Capitol's Jacksonville and Winchester
factories. Capitol issued a promo disc.
DJ1, containing Love Me Do on both sides. The labels are the
same as the stock copy labels except for the number PB-5189
and the addition of the song's 13-second intro time.
