COMMENTS
Tollie Records was a record label formed in February, 1964 as a sub-label of Vee-Jay Records and closed in May 1965. The label distributed some Beatles singles in the United States before Capitol Records.

Vee-Jay did not press its own records. Instead, the company had the metal parts sent to regional  factories for manufacture. Records were then sent directly from these pressing plants to distributors, who in turn sent records to retailers and other distributors.
In 1963, three of the primary pressing plants used by Vee-Jay were;

(1) The American Record Pressing Co. ("ARP") in Owosso, Michigan
ARP pressings have a raised relief script "ARP" machine stamped logo in the trail off areas.
(2) Monarch Records in Los Angeles, California
The discs manufactured by Monarch Records are easily identified by a circled (MR) symbol machine stamped in the trail off areas, which also contain a hand etched job number preceded by a "?" symbol.
(3) Southern Plastics in Nashville, Tennessee
There is no factory logo in the trail off areas.
(4) Silver Plastics, for additional use
Its trail off area has the (MR) symbol, however the record is pressed in vinyl rather than styrene.
(5)Columbia Records
Its trail off area has several and etchings, including "T1", the initials "URJ" and the matrix number followed by a "6". styrene disc.

Vee-Jay began taking orders from distributors for Twist And Shout on February 20, 1964. Twist And Shout sold nearly 1,210,000 copies, including 6,000 copies sent to foreign markets.

True to Vee-Jayfs style, there are numerous label variations of Tollie 9001. All but one appear on yellow labels with differing logos, color schemes and letter sizes. These labels were improvised at the printers or factories, as opposed to having song information overprinted on label backdrops. This resulted in six different logos for Tolliefs initial release! To help meet demand, Vee-Jay used at least six factories to press the single, including ARP, Monarch, Southern Plastics, Columbia, Silver Plastics and, for the first time, Alco Research and Engineering of Hollywood, California (gAlcoh).

9001 type-1: has black print on a yellow label with the word "TOLLIE" appearing in thin block letters above the center hole. These styrene discs were pressed by Monarch with stampers from two different sets of lacquers, all of which have trail off areas with the master number 63-3194 and job number D51071X on the A-side and the master number 63-3193 and job number D51071 on the B-side. The Audio Matrix logo is not visible, suggesting that the metal parts may have been prepared elsewhere. Discs pressed with the first set of stampers have the (MR) symbol and the initials "RA" indicating that these records were mastered at Universal in Chicago. Records pressed with the second set of stampers have the initials "URJ" indicating that these records were mastered at Audio Arts in Los Angeles. Although they do not have the (MR) symbol, they were pressed by Monarch.

To help meet demand, Vee-Jay used at least six factories to press the single, including ARP, Monarch, Southern Plastics, Columbia, Silver Plastics and, for the first time, Alco Research and Engineering of Hollywood, California (gAlcoh).

9001 Type-5 has black print on a yellow label with the counterclockwise box logo in purple above the center hole. Four major variations have been confirmed.

Type-5A has thick, bold type and no publishing information. Its trail off areas have the hand-etched initials gRA,h master number 63-3194 and job numbers Ģ51071X on the A-side and Ģ51071 on the B-side. A barely visible Audio Matrix logo is machine stamped on the A-side and the (MR) symbol appears on both sides.
The typesetting of the master number, record number, song title, song writers and gTHE BEATLESh is identical to the typesetting of Type-1, except there is no song publishing information.

Type-5A(i) is the same, but with the publishing information added at left below the master number. These labels appear to have been printed by Bert-Co, who printed labels for Monarch. Because these discs were pressed in vinyl rather than styrene, they were not manufactured by Monarch. They may have also been pressed by Alco.

Type-5B has the same typesetting as Type-2B with publishing to the right of the center hole and gTollieh preceding the record number at the bottom. Interestingly, the recordfs trail off area has the same markings as Type-1, including the (MR) symbol, but also has the gARPh script logo. Apparently, this record was pressed from stampers prepared by Monarch and forwarded to ARP in Michigan.

Type-5C has publishing credits to the left of the center hole and does not have the name gTollieh preceding the record number at the bottom of the label. With the exception of the record number at the bottom of the label appearing as g9001h rather than gT-9001-Ah or gT-9001-B,h the typesetting of this record is identical to Type-11. The master number and the initials gRAh are hand-etched in the trail off area, along with the machine stamped Audio Matrix logo.

Type-5C(i) is the same, but has the more complete gT-9001-Ah or gT-9001-Bh record numbers at the bottom. These records appear to have been pressed by Southern Plastics.

Type-5D  has the same typesetting as Type-3B with gTollie Records No. 9001h to the left of the center hole and gMaster No. 633194h to the right, all in small print. Its trail off area has the same markings as Type-1, including the (MR) logo; however, it is pressed in vinyl rather than styrene. Thus, it was pressed at a factory other than Monarch. This may be an Alco pressing.
