COMMENTS
|
In Japan, promotional
records were traditionally distributed free of charge to
radio stations, record shops, and the mass media to boost
record sales or, in some cases, to promote a tour. There are
two types of promotional releases. Type-1: This type is known as a "white label promo," which features a specially designed label. The basic layout of Odeon white label singles is very similar to that of regular commercial Odeon singles. However, the promo version is distinguished by having the perimeter text, Odeon logo, and circled text printed in red, with all remaining text in black. The black text often has a unique "hand-lettered" appearance, quite unlike the standard commercial font. The release date is printed in black, located above and to the left of the song title. Typically, the standard commercial insert / lyric sheet is used, but with specific alterations to prohibit retail sale. Type-2: The second type is a simpler "sticker promo." This is essentially a regular commercial pressing that has a promotional sticker affixed to the sleeve or insert. This style of promo is occasionally found on post-1975 releases. |

COMMENTS
|
Toshiba had already begun use of the new EMI/Odeon label as early as 1976 on certain new releases not covered under the Apple label. By the early 1980's, the EMI/Odeon label had completely supplanted the Apple label on all Beatles releases. When the record label change, the EMI/Odeon logo also replaced the Apple logo on the front sleeves of all records. | ||||
