COMMENTS | The
Beatles Ballads is a compilation album featuring a selection of ballad
songs by The Beatles. The album was not released in the United States,
but in Mexico, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Italy,
India, Japan, South Korea and Australia. Ten of the 20 tracks had been issued just three years earlier on the "Love Songs" album. A remixed version of “Norvegian Wood” is included with the backing track now on the right-hand channel instead of on the left and the vocals mixed into the center. The cover art by "Patrick" (John Byrne) had been created in 1968 as a possible cover for what would become The Beatles ("The White Album"). Its style and concept appears to support the White Album's original working title of A Doll's House. The cover art was taken from the Alan Aldridge book "The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics" and is a painting by John Patrick Byrne which was used in the foreword on page 6. "Patrick" had also done album covers for other artists in the early seventies. The album sleeve manufactured by Garrod & Lofthouse ltd. 1st. pressing / 20th. October 1980: Black label with 2 white-black EMI logos and silver print. "EMI RECORDS LTD. ..." printed at the start perimeter print and "MADE IN GT BRITAIN" printed at the end of the perimeter print. Matrix numbers: Side-1: PCS 7214 A2 Side-2: PCS 7214 B2 2nd. pressing / 1982: Black label with two white-black EMI logos and silver print. “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER…” printed at the start perimeter print. Importantly, around the 11 ‘o’ clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “…UNAUTHORISED PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, BROADCASTING, COPYING AND HIRING…”. Instead, added “MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BY EMI RECORDS LIMITED” text at the end of the perimeter print. Matrix numbers: Side-1: PCS 7214 A4 (maybe) Side-2: PCS 7214 B3 (maybe) |
