COMMENTS
|
On 8th December 1967
the "Magical Mystery Tour" soundtrack was released in the
U.K. as a double EP package. Sales from the two Beatles EPs
released by Capitol in 1964 and 1965 had been considerably
less than sales of singles and albums. Even with the
Beatles, the EP format was difficult to market in America.
Capitol president Alan Livingston decided that the songs
should be incorporated into an album for U.S. release. The
proposed LP would contain the six songs from the film along
with the A-side to the group's new single, "Hello Goodbye",
plus the four songs from the group's previous two singles,
"Penny Lane", "Strawberry Fields Forever", All You Need Is
Love", and "Baby You're A Rich Man". U.S. album was issued on 27th. November 1967 as Capitol MAL 2835 (mono) and SMAL 2835 (stereo). The package was a huge hit with the public, generating the highest level of initial sales of any album to date, and netting the label more than $8 million in just three weeks. Realising the Capitol had created a product too popular to ignore, EMI imported a number of copies to the United Kingdom (7th January 1968). Through the usual EMI ordering procedures British record shops could order it using the U.S. catalogue number of (S)MAL 2835 and it became the biggest selling import for E.M.I. selling over 50,000 copies, which even took it into the official charts reaching number 31. Both mono and stereo versions of the U.S. album were exported for U.K. The covers have a gold foil sticker stating "Specialy Imported by E.M.I. RECORDS" in red. For side-1 of the MONO LP: Capitol used the same mixes found on the mono Magical Mystery Tour EP, including the mix for "I Am The Walrus". That mix differs from the Capitol single, which has a few extra bars between the lines "I'm Crying" and "Yellow Matter Custard" that were edited out by the time the EP was prepared. The songs on side-2 have the same mixes used on the Capitol singles. There are exactly the same as the U.K. mixes, except for "Penny Lane", which is missing the song's opening bass note that precedes Paul's vocal on the U.K. single. For the first five songs on side-1 of the STEREO LP: Capitol used the same mixes found on the stereo "Magical Mystery Tour" EP. FOr "I Am The Walrus", Capitol used an earlier mix of the song made on 6th. November rather than the superior remix made on 17th. November that appears on the stereo EP. The later mix has six sets of the two-note pattern opening the song, while the original mix has only four. The first two songs on side-2 are in true stereo. Because George Martin knew that Capitol was placing "Hello, Goodbye" on its album, the song was mixed for stereo on 6th. November 1967. Since "Strawberry Fields Forever" was originally intended for inclusion on an album, a stereo mix had been made on 29th. December 1966. Capitol used this mix for its album. By the time "Penny Lane" was completed on 17th. January 1967, the decision had been made to issue the song as a single. Thus, no stereo mix was made. Capitol created a fake sterero duophonic mix from the mono single mix (without the trumpet ending). As no stereo mixes were made for the single "All You Need Is Love b/w Baby, You're A Rich Men", these songs were also given fake stereo duophonic mixes created from the single's mono mixes. The U.S. version had a yellow border and the song titles on the front cover. It also bore the words: "Includes 24-page full color picture book". The front cover photograph featured The Beatles in the animal costumes they wore in the film: John Lennon as a walrus, Paul McCartney as a hippopotamus, George Harrison as a rabbit and Ringo Starr as a chicken. The US LP had a gatefold cover, inside which was a 24-page booklet with photographs from the filming of Magical Mystery Tour, and a cartoon strip telling the story. The booklet is a direct copy of the EP booklet of the UK. The booklets were probably printed on the East Coast by Queens Litho and on the West Coast by Medallion Press in Los Angeles. The lyrics to the songs from the film are printed on the inside right slick. Capitol & EMI box logomark and a circled "PRINTED IN U.S.A." were printed in black at the bottom of the inside. Initial East Coast slicks have "No you're not!" under the title I Am The Walrus in block letters, whereas later East Coast and all West Coast slicks have "No you're not!" hand-written. The first run of the inner gatefold slicks mistakenly credited publishing on all of the album's songs to "Maclen Music, Inc., BMI". The later stereo covers were corrected, but mono covers were not corrected. The album had the words "Apple presents" and an early version of the Apple logo on the inside of the gatefold and carried the credit: "Produced by Big George Martin". The initial labels also credit BMI for all songs. 1) MONO label: There are East Coast, West Coast, and small print in-house, mono label variations with BMI on side-1. Jacksonville in-house labels have the complete matrix number (MAL-X-1-2835 / MAL-X-2-2835), while L.A. labels are missing the "X". 2) STEREO label: The stereo first pressings also list BMI on side-1, with East Coast, West Coast, and small print in-house variations. After learning that the film songs were monitored by ASCAP, Capitol changed BMI to ASCAP on the side-1 stereo labels. East Coast, West Coast, and thick print in-house labels with ASCAP on side-1 have been confirmed. As mono was being phased out in America in 1968, it is unlikely that any later mono labels were printed with ASCAP credits. |
