The back cover has the same George Harrison
quote that appeared on the Canadian jacket, but the text is
considerably larger. The quote is preceeded at the top with
a consumer warning: "The release of this album is justified
by the enormous influence the Beatles have had on
contemporary pop music. Many record collectors will be curious about their earliest recording dates, others will find this album a bummer. In any event, here is an album that takes its place alongside the large body of Beatles recordings. |

COMMENTS

In the
Beginning (Circa 1960) was released by Polydor Records in
1970 (catalogue number 24-4504). It was recorded in Hamburg
with The Beatles in 1961 (except for "Sweet Georgia Brown"
in 1962) and features Pete Best on the drums. This album,
expanded with four more tracks without the Beatles'
participation, was originally released as "The Beatles'
First !" in Germany in 1964. It was reissued in the United Kingdom in 1967 with the same title - without the exclamation point - then in Canada under the title Very Together in 1969. Previous American releases of this material in 45RPM form was split in 1964 between MGM Records and Atco Records. Polydor (which eventually absorbed MGM) established its United States branch in 1969 which explains why this package was released much later in The Beatles' history. All of the tracks feature vocals by Sheridan except for "Ain't She Sweet", sung by John Lennon, and the instrumental "Cry for a Shadow". First Press: Has the gatefold cover designed by David Krieger. The front cover features a striking Joel Brodsky photograph of a stack of Mersey Beat. The back cover has the same George Harrison quote that appeared on the Canadian jacket, but the text is considerably larger. The quote is preceeded at the top with a consumer warning. The first pressing of the disc has the number 24-4504 and "The Beatles -Cira 1960 In The Beginning Featuring Tony Sheridan" on the labels. Columbia Press: has SIDE 1 and SIDE 2. Monarch Press: SIDE ONE and SIDE TWO. The perimeter print on the labels was "Manufactured by Polydor incorporated New York. N.Y.". The album was reissued in 1981 in a non-gatefold single-pocket cover. In 1984, the perimeter print on the labels was expanded and changed from "Manufactured by Polydor" to "Manufactured and Marketed by Polygram". |
