COMMENTS
The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl Promo Advance Pressing LP Vinyl Record (Capitol SMAS-11638).

When radio stations began playing songs from bootleg albums containing the 1964 Hollywood Bowl concert in anticipation of the official release, Capitol moved up the album's released date and pressed promotional copies of the album for radio airplay.
Because neither the album labels nor the covers were ready, these promo discs have white labels with minimal text. They were packaged in generic white jackets with "Advance Pressing The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" stamped in red uppercase letters.

Later review copies of the finished album were sent in black mailers featuring the color Hollywood Bowl graphic.

The Hollywood Bowl concerts a year apart were recorded by Capitol records using a three-track recording system. The 1964 concert recording engineer was Hugh Davies, and the 1965 was Pete Abbott which were produced by Voyle Gilmore under the supervision of George Martin. But the results were technically disappointing (not surprising with 17,000 continuously screaming fans) and the idea was shelved for over 10 years.
Finally, the Capitol president Bhaskar Menon discovered the tapes and asked George Martin to give them another listen.
George was set to work in January 1977 enhancing and transferring the performances to modern multi-track tapes.

This album is a compilation of three performances that took place at the Hollywood Bowl in the US on August 23, 1964, and August 29-30, 1965. In other words, it is an edited album, not a recording of the entire concert.

Wallace Edward Traugott
Mastering and lacquer-cutting engineer based in the United States. Wally or Wly is always credited in the runout grooves of the record, usually alongside the Mastered by Capitol stamp.

The back of the album says that only recordings from August 23, 1964 and August 30, 1965 were used, but this is incorrect.
"Ticket to Ride" and "Help!" were recorded on August 29, 1965, and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" used recordings from both the 29th and 30th.

The album's gatefold cover was prepared under the direction of Capitol's Roy Kohara. The tan-background front features the full-stage gray image of the Hollywood Bowl and the green and blue tickets. The album title is at the top, and the Capitol logo is centered at the bottom.
The album title and the tickets are embossed.
The tan-background back cover has an embossed image of a torn and slightly folded 1965 blue ticket in the center.

The first two of three columns have liner notes by George Martin.
The third column has details regarding the songs followed by production and art credits.

The inside gatefold features a Ken Veeder black and white photo of the Beatles 1964 performance at the Hollywood Bowl. The picture was taken from one of the box seats and shows a row of lucky fans, some with binocu-lars, and the reflection pool in front of the stage. Images of Beatles memorabilia are imposed over the photo. The items include the 1964 tour program, the 1965 tour program, a Playtape cartridge containing four songs from the 1965 album Beatles VI, two pennants, a metal tray from 1964 and various buttons.

2nd. Issue: Beginning in 1980, Capitol packaged the album in covers without the embossed images.
3rd.  issue: In 1989, the UPC bar code was added to the back of the cover.

The records were packaged in a custom inner sleeve, featuring black and white Ven Veeder photos.
Each side has a different picture of screaming fans lucky enough to be seated in box seats. One side has white autographs of the Beatles over the picture's black background.

The records were pressed with tan-background custom labels.
The side one labels have an image of a torn 1965 blue ticket, while the side two labels show a torn 1964 green ticket. Although Capitol was informed of the day-of-the-week error appearing on the tickets, this mistake was never corrected on the album covers or record labels.
