Capitol was distributed mono/stereo promotional copies of "Girl" to radio stations on 13th. October, 1977, before cancelling the record.Although "Girl" began receiving airplay in some markets, Capitol had second thoughts about its choice of songs. It had recently released Paul's "Girls School" as a single (Capitol 4504) and was reportedly concerned over having three Beatle tunes with "Girl" in the title out at the same time. | ||

COMMENTS
|
Capitol
plammed on pulling a pair songs from its upcoming "Love
Songs" album
for single release. The 45 was to feature "Girl (from Rubber
Soul)" on
the A side and "You're Going To Lose That Girl (from Help!)
on the B
side. Capitol went so far as to manufacture picture sleeves and to distribute mono/stereo promotional copies of "Girl" to radio stations on 13th. October, 1977, before cancelling the record. Although "Girl" began receiving airplay in some markets, Capitol had second thoughts about its choice of songs. It had recently released Paul's "Girls School" as a single (Capitol 4504) and was reportedly concerned over having three Beatle tunes with "Girl" in the title out at the same time. In addition, although "Girl" was a great album track in its day, there was little about the song to suggest that it could be a hit single in 1977's disco-dominated charts. The single's picture sleeve mimics the simulated brown leather and gold foil album cover for "Love Songs", which features a modified version of Richard Avedon's 1967 portrait of the group inside a gold background oval. "GIRL" is centered at the top of the sleeve in large gold letters. The title of the flip side appears below in smaller gold letters running across the sleeve. The phrase "From the album" appears above the Love Songs oval logo. The record number 4506 and the Capitol oval logo are centered at the bottom. "Printed in U.S.A." is in the left lower corner and "(C) 1977 Capitol Records, Inc." is in the lower right corner, both in small uppercase letters. The curved construction sleeves have the same images and text on both sides. The promotional record has mono and stereo versions of "Girl". The brown and gold label backdrop is the same as the custom label designed for the "Love Songs" album. The top of the label features the Avedon portrait from the cover. The text appears over the dominant brown part of the label is gold text over the gold part of the label is brown. The mono side of the disc is identified as pro-8735. The disc were manufactured by Capitol in Los Angeles. The record's limited press run has caused this to be the most collectible of the Capitol singles from the 70's and 80's. No legitimate stock copies of the single have been confirmed, although label sheets for the single were prepared. |
