COMMENTS
|
In England, "Can't Buy
Me Love / You Can't Do That (R5114)" was released on 20th
March 1964. The record had advance orders of over one
million copies and topped all of the U.K. charts. In the U.S., the same single was released on Capitol 5150 four days earlier on 16th. March 1964. The "Can't Buy Me Love" picture sleeve is the rarest of the standard sleeves issued with a Capitol Beatles single. It features the same Dezo Hoffmann photograph as the sleeve for Capitol's first Beatles single. There are only one variation. The East Coast Queens Litho sleeves shows all of George's head, and have a straight cut top. The West Coast sleeves have not been confirmed. First Press: Yellow and Orange Swirl label without "subsidiary" print. Publisher's Credit was"Northern Songs Music, Ltd." (Reissue: Northern Songs Limited") There are two variations of the label of the first pressing, 1) East Coast version: the label have their song titles printed on 1 line. 2) West Coast version: On the labels of the West Coast singles, the song titles are on 2 lines. |

COMMENTS
|
In 1968, as part of a
corporate restructuring of Capitol and EMI, Capitol Records,
Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of a new entity known
as Capitol Industries, Inc. The decision was made to identify the new arrangement on subsequent Capitol releases. This required the reprinting of 45 and album labels to reflect the new ownership. For single releases, the perimeter print was changed to gMFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC., A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES, INC., U.S.A.h There are four basic variations of the subsidiary swirls: (1) Keystone labels with black perimeter print (Scranton) (2) Keystone labels with white perimeter print (Scranton) (3) Bert-Co labels with white perimeter print (Los Angeles) (4) Small print labels with white perimeter print (Los Angeles /usually or Scranton) The black perimeter print was used on labels printed from mid-August 1968 through mid-October 1968, at which time white perimeter print was used through April 1969.
