Parlophone label with silver print Type-4 Black and Yellow Parlophone label with silver print: the name "THE PARLOPHONE CO. LTD." (uppercase) on the outer rim, the "SOLD IN U.K. ..." statement and the "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1964" statement was printed. Beginning in 1964, Parlophone (and all the other EMI companies) began printing a phrase in the centers of all their singles, EPs and LPs, which said: SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS, SEE PRICE LISTS. This notice appears on the labels of every UK market EMI product, from very early 1964, right through mid-1969. Black and White
Parlophone label with silver print: with two "EMI" marks, placed at the top and bottom, which are white with black print (reversed). The name "EMI RECORDS LTD." (uppercase) on the outer rim, and the "℗ 1964" statement. In 1969, Columbia and Parlophone introduced a label design with one boxed EMI logo at the bottom. This design, with silver text on a black background, was used from late 1969 to early 1971. In early 1971, Columbia and Parlophone added a second boxed EMI logo at the top of the label. This design remained in use for many years. The entire Beatles catalog appears to have been reissued between 1971 and 1973 on labels with two boxed EMI logos and rim text beginning “THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD…”. On 1st July 1973, The Gramophone Company Limited was renamed to EMI Records Limited, and accordingly the start of the label rim text was changed to “EMI RECORDS LTD…”. The change was gradual: for example, Deep Purple’s “Burn”, released in February 1974, still carried the earlier rim text. In October 1980 the rim-text was again altered so that it started with “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER…” The gatefold sleeve was constructed from a single piece of material, with laminated front and back covers and foldover flaps joining the sleeve on the inside-right panel. To remove the disc, open the gatefold and slide it out from the left. The orange blur on the front cover is reported to be Tony Bramwell’s hand as he held back tree branches during the photo shoot. The back-cover photograph is a composite: the image of The Beatles was cropped and superimposed over a background of leaves. |
