Black and Yellow
Parlophone label with silver print: the name "THE GRAMOPHONE CO. LTD.(capital letter)" on the outer rim, the "SOLD IN U.K." remark, and the "(P) 1963" statement. Beginning in 1964, Parlophone (and all the other EMI companies) began printing a phrase in the centers of all their singles, EP's and LP's, which said: SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS, SEE PRICE LISTS. This notice appears on the labels of every UK market EMI product, from very early 1964, right through mid-1969. On 1st July 1965, EMI underwent a merger and each individual ceased to be a L.T.D. company and became a subsudialy of "The Gramophone Co. Ltd." which was owned by EMI. This merger meant yet another label change occurred and previous "Parlophone Co. Ltd." rims where replaced with the new "Gramophone" rims. The word "stereo", on upper right of the front cover, is small-size. Sleeves for "With The Beatles (stereo)" did two Londonfs of printing house: Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd. and Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. "Small Steleo" issue has a sleeve made by "Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." only (maybe). There is the words in the box --"IMPORTANT This record is intended for use only on special stereophonic reproducers. ..."-- on upper right of the back cover. Side 1: labeling is incorrectly credit track 6 as "Wilson". Side 2 labeling is corrected: Track 3 now spelled "YOU REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME". But, Sleeve incorrectly spells track 3 as "YOU REALLY GOTTA HOLD ON ME". The publishing credit for "Money" says "Dominion, Belinda (Ldn.) Ltd." |

Emerald Music was formed in 1964 and from the beginning had its roots in Irish Music, later expanding to cover a range of Scottish music, including some of Scotland's greatest Pipe Bands. The company founder was Mervyn Solomon, who was also the man who first recorded Rory Gallagher and Van Morrison. In those days, Van was fronting his own R & B group called "Them". Other local artists who went on to make a name for themselves included Jim Armstrong, guitarist - who also played with Them, and John Wilson who played with Them and Rory Gallagher. The John Anderson Big Band has also come through the Emerald "School". John's big band was the backbone of the Jive Bunny hits!! Of course in recent years we have had great success with Celtic Pride, a dance duo who has put a whole new dimension to Irish music and brought it to a new younger audience. With the combination of a vast back catalogue of music, and the new more contemporary recordings, the Emerald catalogue boasts to be one of the most comprehensive Irish and Scottish record labels. |

However, this change was not always straightforward: we know that, for example, the album "Burn" released by Deep Purple on February 1974, still had the old perimeter print. In October 1980 the rim-text was again altered so that it started with gALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCERch. French Press has two theories: 1) Parlophone ceased to release records (in the United Kingdom) in 1973 because of the oil crisis; the production was moved to France up to 1976: so, for example, there were no UK Beatles pressings (re-pressings) in 1974 and 1975. 2) The Hiatus at Hayes, caused by production issues ( a building closure ) and not as the oil crisis ( although the co-incidence is interesting ) as far as Beatles pressings were concerned was probably much shorter, end of 1973 through much of 1974. At some point in the mid-1970s the EMI pressing plant at Hayes (just outside London) was closed for refurbishment and EMI contracted their Pathé Marconi subsidiary in France to press LP's for a short time. These LP's were then put into U.K. sleeves and sold in the U.K. The phrase "MADE IN FRANCE" were printed on the outer rim on the label. |
