Atlantic Records was one of several
companies that turned down the Beatles in 1963. The first single (ATCO
6302) paired two songs featuring Tony Sheridan on lead vocal: "Sweet
Georgia Brown" and "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby". By the time
the record was released in early June, 1964. On month after issuing its first Beatles' single, Atlantic released a second pairing of the Bert Kaempfert-produced songs on 6th July 1964. "Ain't She Sweet", with John Lennon on Lead vocal, was coupled with Tony Sheridan's performance of "Nobody's Child". Atlantic used three different factories to press its first Atco Beatles single: (1) MGM Records in Bloomfield, New Jersey labels printed by Queens Litho and can be identified by the stylized machine stamped "S" in their trail off areas. (2)Monarch Records in Los Angeles, California pressings are styrene and have the machine stamped (MR) logo and hand etched job numbers in their trail off areas. (3) Plastic Products in Memphis, Tennessee do not have a factory identification logo. The Atco singles were pressed with label backdrops having a yellow and white background. The yellow upper half of the label has "45 RPM" in black at the top of and "ATCO" in large white block letters outlined in black. The word "RECORDS" is in black uppercase letters below the "O" in "ATCO". A black drawing of the front part of a trumpet appears to the left of the center hole. The lower half of the label backdrop is white with "Division of ATLANTIC RECORDS, New York, N. Y." printed in black along the lower perimeter. ATCO 6302 1st. Press: The first pressings of the record do not have a songwriters credit on the side-2, "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby". And lists its publisher as "Earth, BMI". Type-1) The Bloomfield stock copies: are missing the songwriters credit on the side-2 and have "THE BEATLES" in small tightly spaced letters and "With Tony Sheridan" below the group's name. ATCO 6302 2nd. Press: By the time the label copy was provided to Monarch and Plastic Products, Atlantic had learned the identity of the songwriters and publisher of "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby". The labels used by these factories identify the songwriters as "Singleton-Hall" and publisher as "Roosevelt, BMI". Type-1) The Monarch Stock copies: have " THE BEATLES" in mid-sized tightly spaced letters and "with TONY SHERIDAN" below the group's name. The trail off areas have the job number ∆52855 on the side-1 and ∆52855X on the side-2. Type-2) The Plastic Products stock copies: have "THE BEATLES" in mid-sized loosely spaced letters and "With Tony Sheridan" below the group's name. |
