The rare 1963 pressings of the 45 are
clearly distinguishable from the 1964 reissue of the single. The 1963
records were pressed with white labels containing red print. A script "Swan" appears at the top of the label and the song title, songwriter credits, group's name and record number are at the bottom. Publishing information is to the left of the center hole and song's running time to the right. All initial pressings of the single were manufactured with metal parts orginating from lacquers prepared by Reco-Art in Philadelphia. The trail off areas of these singles contain the following machine stamped markings, "MASTERING RECO-ART PHILA." on both sides and "S-4152-S" on the "She Loves You" side and "S-4152-I" on the "I'll Get You" side. Swan used three different factories to press the initial issues of the single in 1963: (1) RCA Custom in Rockaway, New Jersey (2) Monarch Records in Los Angeles, California (3) Philadelphina plant, believed top be Mallard Manufacturing Company The 1964 reissue singles are clearly distinguishable from the rare 1963 first issue discs. All variations of the 1964 reissue were pressed with black labels with silver print. Nearly all of the reissues have "DON'T DROP OUT" printed on the upper left side of the labels. Although most of these discs were manufactured with metal parts created from lacquers mastered by Reco-Art, some of the later pressings were stamped with metal parts orginating from lacquers cut by Virtue Studio of Philadelphia. The trail off areas to these singles ave the following hand etched markings, "VIRTUE STUDIO" and "BS" on both sides. For the 1964 reissue of the single, Swan prepared an attractive picture sleeve. The sleeve features the same Dezo Hoffmann photo of the group used on the back cover to "MEET THE BEATLES!" Although this is a 1964 pressing, the blue print single is much sought after due to its scareity and novel appearance. Most of the 1964 Rockaway singles have the "RECO-ART" machine stamping in the trail off area of the A side and "VIRTUE STUDIO" hand etched on the B side. COMMENTS
|
After "She Loves You" had run its
course as a top ten hit, Swan attempted to get additional mileage out
of the 45 by promoting its B side. Swan was hoping radio stations would
add "I'll Get You" to their play lists, thus encouraging those who had
not already purchased the record to buy the disk. To prompt DJs to play
"I'll Get You", Swan issued white label promo singles with "I'll Get
You" on one side and a blank label on the other. there are several variations of this odd promotional record. Type-A: The Mallard pressing has an "X" to the lower left and the lower right of the center hole and "PROMOTIONAL COPY" to the upper right. It contains "DON'T DROP OUT" and the George Martin production credit. Quotation marks surround title. The trail off area has Reco-Art markings. The other side of the disk contains a blank white label pressed over smooth black vinyl.(=this record) Type-B: The label to Monarch's promo has "DON'T DROP OUT", but does not have the production credit. "PROMOTIONAL COPY" is to the lower left and "NOT FOR SALE" is to the lower right. Song titles without quotation marks. Its back side has a blank white label on smooth vinyl. Type-C-1: RCA's Rockaway factory pressed at least two variations of the disk, the initial pressings do not have promotional markings and have an all black label on the non-music side. Type-C-2: Later pressings have "PROMOTIONAL COPY" to the right of the center hole and a shiny white label on the back. Both variations have "DON'T DROP OUT", the Martin production credit, Virtue Studio markings and wide spaced grooves on the non-music side. |

COMMENTS

On 29th. January, 1964, the Beatles
recorded German lyric versions of the "She Loves You" and "I Want To
Hold Your Hand" at EMI Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris, France. The
recordings were made at the request of EMI's West German branch,
Electrola. The German lyric recordings, "Sie Liebt Dich" and "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand", were issued in Germany on Odeon O22 671 in mid. March 1964. On or about 21th. May 1964, Swan released a single pairing "Sie Liebt Dich (She Loves You)" with the same master recording "I'll Get You" that served as the B side to "She Loves You". The record lists the group as "DIE BEATLES" on its A side label. All of copies of the single have white labels with "DON'T DROP OUT" and have "VIRTUE STUDIO" hand etched markings in their trail off areas. All but one of the variations have red print. None have production credits. Swan used three different factories to press the initial issues of the single in 1963: (A) Philadelphina plant, believed top be Mallard Manufacturing Company (B) Monarch Records in Los Angeles, California (C) RCA Custom in Rockaway, New Jersey Type-1-A: Mallard Pressing: has the German and English titles surrounded by quotation marks on one line. Type-1-B: Monarch Pressing: has the German title on one line in loose spaced letters with the English title in small uppercase letters below. Some Monarch pressings have orange print. Type-1-C: RCA Rockaway Pressing: has the German title in tall thin print with the English title in parenthese below. Swan did not prepare a picture sleeve for "Sie Liebt Dich". Swan Records was a mid-20th century United States based record label, founded in 1957, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It had a subsidiary label called Lawn Records. Swan came into the spotlight after Brian Epstein leased The Beatles' song "She Loves You" and it became an American number 1 hit in January 1964.
